Automations worth having, and the gimmicks

The demo video is always the same. Somebody says "movie time," the lights fade to purple and a screen slides down. It's a good demo. Six months later nobody in that house has said "movie time" since the second week.

What survives is duller than that and worth considerably more.

The test

One question sorts them: who has to start it? If the answer is you — open an app, say a phrase, tap a tile — you have bought a slower version of the switch that was already on the wall. The automations that last run when nobody is thinking about them, and most of them exist to stop something expensive.

The ones that earn their keep

Automatic water shutoff. Sensors under the water heater, the washer, the dishwasher and each sink, wired to a valve on the main. A sensor gets wet, the water stops. This is the highest-value thing in residential automation and it isn't close. A supply line lets go while you're at work, and ninety seconds is the difference between a wet floor and a claim involving flooring, ceiling, drywall and a month of your life.

Freeze and low-temperature alerts. A cheap sensor in the crawlspace, the well house, the unheated shop. It tells you the temperature is falling before the pipe splits, which is the only useful time to know.

Smoke and CO alerting. Keep your certified detectors — they're certified for a reason. Add a listener that hears them sound and pushes to your phone. An alarm going off in an empty house is noise. The same alarm on your phone is the fire department arriving twenty minutes earlier.

Garage door left open. If it's still open after dark, or after the last person has left, close it and say so. Deeply unglamorous, and the one people thank me for most.

Well pump and sump status. A pump short-cycling is a pump about to burn up. A sump that hasn't run through a week of rain isn't working, and you find that out on the wrong night.

Generator confirmation. A dry contact and a message saying it actually started while you were three states away.

Doors and locks at bedtime. One notification at ten o'clock listing what's unlocked or standing open. Not a lecture, a list.

Occupancy lighting where your hands are full. Stairs, laundry, pantry, garage, the walk from the truck to the door. Not every room.

Every one of those is boring and safety-adjacent. That is not a coincidence.

The gimmicks

Voice as the primary interface. Fine as a supplement. As the way you turn on a light it's slower than the switch, useless when your hands are full, and unavailable to any guest who won't talk to a speaker.

Color-changing everything. You will change the color four times, three of them in the first week.

A screen in every room. One panel by the door people actually use is handy. Five are dust collectors with a firmware backlog.

Notifications you can't act on. "Humidity in the guest room is 61 percent." Every alert you ignore trains you to ignore the next one, and the next one might be the leak sensor. Alert fatigue isn't a personality flaw, it's a design failure.

Anything that depends on presence detection being right. Presence is a probability, not a fact. Never let it control something with a consequence — turning off heat, unlocking a door — because it will be wrong on the day it matters.

The rule I won't bend on

Every automation must degrade to the manual thing. The switch on the wall still works as a switch. The deadbolt still takes a key. The valve still turns by hand. The opener still responds to the button in the garage.

This sounds obvious and it is the most commonly violated principle in the business, because the cheapest way to make something smart is to make it only smart. Smart bulbs are the classic case. Put one in a lamp on an ordinary switch and the switch now cuts power to the bulb's brain — the automation stops working, so you teach the house never to touch that switch. You've made the light more fragile and handed everyone a rule to remember. Put the intelligence in the switch and leave the bulb dumb.

The failure you're designing for is unspectacular: a hub down for an evening while you're away, or a house sitter who doesn't have the app and won't be getting it. If everything still works by hand, that's a non-event instead of a phone call.

What to do

  1. Start with water, then temperature, then doors. Those three cover most of what goes wrong inside a building.
  2. Add convenience lighting only where you're carrying something with both hands.
  3. Cap the alerts. If you wouldn't get out of a chair for it, it's a log entry, not a notification.
  4. Before buying any device, confirm it still does its original job with the hub unplugged.

Six months on, the good version of this is invisible. You don't operate it, you don't talk to it, and the only time you remember it exists is the morning it texts you that the water is off.
